The department cultivates – between Atlantic and Mediterranean influences – a diversity of climatic, geographical and cultural and is home to many places impregnated with history, among which the ornate caves (upper paleolitics), the Gallo – Roman city of Saint – Lizier, the Romanesque chapels, Cathares citadels (Foix, Montségur, etc.) and, nestled in the heart of the mountains, the old Biros or Vicoughos iron mines.
